What changed since the last start

  • None reported for the TOUR Championship week itself. GOLF.com says that “after his win in Memphis” Scheffler swapped his Srixon ZU85 3-iron for his Qi4D 7-wood, and TaylorMade also reports the swap, but neither says whether it happened at the BMW Championship (his previous start) or at East Lake.

What wasn’t reported

The reports we found didn’t cover these, so we’ve left them off the bag rather than guess.

  • Whether the 3-iron-to-7-wood swap happened at the BMW Championship or at East Lake isn’t reported.
  • The 4-iron shaft is unresolved (GOLF.com and GolfWRX: True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100; Golfweek and Today’s Golfer: Nippon N.S. Pro Modus3 Hybrid Prototype).
  • The 3-wood’s measured loft is unresolved (GOLF.com 14.75°, GolfWRX 13.5°).
  • The putter’s exact loft, lie and grip are unresolved, because TaylorMade’s spec and the media reports differ.

Our take

This is Tour Weekly’s opinion, not the player’s or any brand’s.

Scheffler closed the season with the Qi4D driver he put in play in Memphis. At the BMW he explained why he finally moved on from his Qi10, saying that ‘if it got tested again, it was going to get close to failing.’ The move everyday golfers should notice, though, is the 7-wood. After Memphis he swapped his Srixon 3-iron for a 21° Qi4D 7-wood, a club GOLF.com says he also used to win the American Express in January. TaylorMade says it launches about 1.5 to 2 degrees higher than his 3-iron, with about 1,500 rpm more spin. If Scheffler will give up a 3-iron for a lofted wood, you can too. Our read: if your long irons won’t hold a green, put a 7-wood on your demo list. Leave his P·7TW blades to elite ball-strikers.
