What changed since the last start
New driver: he replaced the TaylorMade Qi10 he'd used for the better part of three seasons with a TaylorMade Qi4D (8°). It was his third competitive try with the Qi4D, after the Hero World Challenge in December and the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March; both earlier tries lasted one event before he went back to the Qi10. TaylorMade's Adrian Rietveld: 'Scottie told us that Qi4D has been faster and it holds the spin better than his previous driver.'

What wasn’t reported
The reports we found didn’t cover these, so we’ve left them off the bag rather than guess.
- The 4-iron shaft is unresolved: GOLF.com and GolfWRX say True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100, while Golfweek says a Nippon N.S. Pro Modus3 Hybrid Prototype.
- The 3-wood’s measured loft is unresolved (GOLF.com 14.75°, GolfWRX 13.5°).
- The putter’s exact loft, lie and grip are unresolved, because TaylorMade’s spec and the media reports differ.
- His previous start before Memphis isn’t named in the reports; the driver change is reported against the Qi10 he’d been using.
Our take
This is Tour Weekly’s opinion, not the player’s or any brand’s.
Scheffler won by eight in Memphis with a new driver, and how he got there is the lesson. GOLF.com says he’d tried TaylorMade’s Qi4D at the Hero World Challenge and the Arnold Palmer Invitational and gone back to his Qi10 both times. TaylorMade says he found the new head faster and better at holding spin, and GOLF.com notes his version wears a blue face and a glossy crown to match the old one. He switched when it proved better, not because it was new. Elsewhere he stuck with trusted P·7TW irons and earlier-generation Vokey wedges, and TaylorMade says his Spider Tour X putter gained 8.92 strokes on the greens. Our read: the Qi4D is a retail head, but he plays it at 8° with an X-flex shaft, so most of us should start a fitting with more loft.
